2019 update: Constructing the future of Denver South

On May 22, the Denver South Economic Development Partnership held a forum to update business and government leaders on the status of major transportation projects in south metro Denver.

Southeast Rail Extension (E, F and R Lines)
Andy Mutz, RTD project manager, reviewed FasTrack efforts. Now that the southeast rail extension is finished, RTD is constructing the north metro rail line (N Line) and planning the central rail extension.

He reviewed the history of the southeast rail extension project, noting the unprecedented contribution of $25 million by the City of Lone Tree and area stakeholders, along with $3 million of in-kind contributions of land and right-of-way that constituted 12 percent of the project cost, far exceeding the 2.5 percent match RTD had requested. He said that strong support was key to RTD successfully securing federal funding for the project. Total cost for all the entire project was $233.1 million. It took three years to complete, the ribbon cutting was May 17.

C-470 Express Lanes
Jiovanna Toppi, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project manager, said the C-470 project included two express lanes westbound from I-25 to Wadsworth Blvd., one express lane westbound from Colorado Blvd. to Wadsworth Blvd., and one express lane eastbound I-25 to Wadsworth Blvd. It also includes 12 bridge widenings and two new bridges over the South Platte River.

She said that CDOT is using a drone to identify maintenance issues and improve safety, resource management, and productivity as part of this project. During the spring and summer there will be ongoing traffic switches to new concrete pavement and extended ramp closures at Quebec Street as they set the trail underpass. County Line & I-25 Road Improvement Project
Justin Schmitz, director of public works and mobility for the City of Lone Tree, explained that the initial parts of this project, already completed, added a left turn signal into Park Meadows Mall from westbound County Line Road, an additional lane with a traffic signal exiting the mall and dedicated right turn lanes into the mall onto Park Meadows Drive.

The second phase, already begun, will add additional lanes on the southbound off-ramp of I-25. It will improve safety and access into the adjacent commercial, retail, and office parks on both sides of I-25. The cost is $1.5 million.

The last phase, still in design, will reconfigure two existing closely spaces intersections east of I-25 into a single more traditional layout to improve mobility and provide improved service levels. It is estimated to cost $8 million.

South I-25 Gap Project-Monument to Castle Rock
Tamara Rollison, CDOT communications manager for region 1, updated business and government leaders on this project, whose goals to increase safety, protect wildlife, upgrade infrastructure and technology, and improve truck access.

The construction of express lanes and new pavement for the five miles from south of Castle Rock to Sky View Lane (Tomah Road) is underway and expected to be completed in fall 2020.

The construction of express lanes and new pavement, bridge replacements at Upper Lake Gulch Road, Spruce Mountain Road, and Plum Creek, along with two wildlife crossings along the six miles between Sky View Lane and Greenland Road, are getting underway and will take three years to complete.

The express lanes and new pavement, interchange improvements at Greenland and County Line Roads, along with the bridge culvert at Greenland Road and the three wildlife crossings on the seven miles between Greenland Road and Monument began late last year and is also expected to take three years.

As work continues, CDOT is taking steps to minimize impacts to commuters. They have installed emergency pull-outs and shoulders, safety patrols, full-time incident management staff, and frequent real-time information to assist motorists. To keep traffic moving, they are only closing lanes at night.

CDOT has also added additional stops to in the DTC area on the Bustang bus route and are encouraging commuters to try Bustang “for free through I-25 MyWay program.”  Bustang is a CDOT commuter bus. One of its routes runs on weekdays between Colorado Springs and DTC northbound in the morning (with 19 different stops between Arapahoe Road and Yosemite Street and the Belleview Light Rail station) and southbound between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (with 16 separate stops in the DTC area).
